Final selections were made in June 2010 and June 2011 for the first two rounds of applications to the Rocket Grants project awards program, an opportunity available to artists who live within an 80-mile radius of downtown Kansas City – including Lawrence, KS, Topeka, KS, St. Joseph, MO, Warrensburg, MO and Sedalia,MO (see map). Rocket Grants are specifically intended to encourage work that is inventive and “under the radar”, and that engages or benefits an audience somewhere other than in a museum or art gallery. Selections are therefore evaluated not only on the artistic merits of the proposed projects, but also on their capacity to stimulate further growth in a diverse and supportive art ecology. The images in the slide show are of the award winning artists at a reception to honor them. The 2010 gathering was in the Rose Room at Loose Park, and the 2011 one at the Lakeside Nature Center in Swope Park.

I am appalled that you would condone animal cruelty by showing this person’s “art” and you pay people to do the cruelty! I’m talking about the ” Story of the Chicken ” by Amber Hansen, I have many friends in the art world who are just as appalled, we will not be giving any money to you or the Spencer Museum unless you stop condoning animal cruelty and cancel this womans exhibit!!Animal cruelty I’s not art! It’s a “legal” way that people can be cruel, they call it “art”! Sincerely I M Lopez
