2010-11 Rocket Grants awardee A. Bitterman had a busy summer.
Last spring Bitterman was awarded the Indy Island residency by the Indianapolis Museum of Art, as a result of his proposal, Indigenous: Out of the Wild. The opportunity required artists to imagine how they would engage with the public while spending time on Indianapolis Island, an inhabitable sculpture designed by Andrea Zittel to float in a lake amidst 100 acres of wooded museum grounds.
Bitterman spent the months of June and July loose in the park, inviting visitors to engage with a human sized possum trap, two spotting scope-equipped viewing stations, a GPS tracker that could pinpoint his current location, an interpretive kiosk, a zone of unmediated flux, and videos instructing them how to communicate with the artist via sign language.
