WE! artists are busy, now less than two months out from our opening night. Mark Southerland and Matt Tady are busy working on redesigning the space. Repurposing, replicating, and recycling materials found in our abandoned site.
Laura Frank, Jason Dixon, Matt Tady, Kalen Compernolle, Leralee Whittle, and I have spent many hours rehearsing and nearly living in the space. For most of our lives, we have tried to stay out of working in office spaces such as this, but rapidly the linear and functional characteristics of an office space are providing us with many insights into the purpose of this project. The patina of this space is unique, peeling wallpaper, piles of data cables, outdated berber carpet.
I have also be working via phone and Skype on the sound score for two of the performance spaces with Paul Rudy, who is currently on his fellowship at The American Academy in Rome. This long distance “rehearsing” and “work-shoping” has been a new and interesting way to work. Already it is forcing us to reevaluate collaboration, and how we communicate ideas and visual images.
